From the commonplace to the complex: research publishing and communication in the modern age is a rich environment of exciting applications, services and platforms. But despite this all these ideas, our industry has been remarkably resistant to change in a post-internet world. Michael Taylor explores the reasons for the lack of progress and examines the value systems that underlie the current model. By reference to several innovations (Orcid, altmetrics, the article of the future), he shows that recent advances in managing the problems of scholarly identity and attribution may come together to create the necessary groundwork on which to build a new scholarly universe.
